Our History

Gordon Joseph Tregoning moved to the suburb of Grange, Adelaide, South Australia, in 1925, where he attended Grange Primary School and Thebarton Technical School.

He completed an apprenticeship as a Fitter and Turner with C.R. Smith & Co., later known as J.R. Engineering Pty Ltd, operated by his uncle.

From 1941 to 1946, Gordon served in the Royal Australian Navy, spending most of this time aboard the repair ship Platypus, where he developed skills across a wide range of trades.

After his discharge, Gordon established his business in a tomato shed measuring 90 ft by 20 ft in Mellor Avenue, Underdale, South Australia. In 1947, he purchased his current property on Hardys Road, Underdale, and formally incorporated Gordon J Tregoning Pty Ltd and Treg Trailers Pty Ltd.

Gordon built his first trailer as a favour for a neighbour, with further work following through word of mouth. While the business gradually expanded, he deliberately maintained it as a small, family-owned enterprise.

Although the company diversified into various areas over time, its core values and focus remained unchanged.

Engineering projects undertaken included brick-making machines, wine presses, pizza ovens, display and signage works, rainwater tanks, rolling work for Adelaide bus shelters, rolling work for local artists including sculptures, playground equipment such as park benches, rolling work for the Adelaide Velodrome, rolling work for the Australian Submarine Corporation, and machining work for the Torrens Island power station.

Trailers manufactured ranged from domestic household trailers to custom-built trailers for government departments, councils, telecommunications, mining and exploration, farming and agricultural use, camping and storage, as well as trailers for the defence force.

Gordon J Tregoning worked in and managed the company from 1946 until his retirement in October 2006 at the age of 88.

The family business has continued to operate successfully to the present day. In 2025, Gordon J Tregoning Pty Ltd transferred ownership of Treg Trailers Pty Ltd, and from late 2025 the business has operated under new management as Treg Australia Pty Ltd.
